Affectionately known around the world as Big Ben, the Elizabeth Tower has undergone the largest, most complex conservation project in its history.

Covered in scaffolding from 2017 to 2022, the tower was repaired from the gilt cross and orb at its tip, to the bottom of its 334-step staircase. Parliament has restored the clock tower to its former glory, as well as modernising and upgrading facilities to make it fit for the 21st century. This is vital to ensure that this iconic building, situated on a UNESCO World Heritage site is safeguarded for future generations to visit and enjoy.

We were selected to design, supply, install and commission the sprinkler system and dry riser systems. Over the last 4 years we have worked closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the fire systems are integrated into this complicated heritage project without disrupting normal day to day activities at Parliament and remaining respectful of the structural setting.

The sprinkler system is designed to comply with BS EN12845 and BS 9990 for the dry riser system.

The sprinkler system, incorporating multistage multi outlet pumps, provides protection at the highest level of 162m. The 200+ sprinkler heads are spread throughout the exhibition areas and protect key assets including the historical clock mechanism room and behind the Big Ben clockface itself.

In addition to the technical complexity and historical sensitivity of this project, sustainability was at the heart of our approach. We placed strong emphasis on minimising the environmental impact of our installation works.

Our project manager Lee Baldwin said, “What a privilege to have been involved in a unique historic project such as this. We are really pleased with the finished product and during the 4 years we overcame many challenges. It really wasn’t like a normal construction project; the entire project team had the ethos of how we make this project happen and how do we collectively create a positive outcome we are proud of. Thank you to team Sir Robert McAlpine for involving us.”
